Description
New York Living Rooms is the first installment in Dominique Nabokov’s revered trilogy of interior photography works, reissued by Apartamento Publishing more than two decades after its initial publication in 1998. Originally commissioned as a photo essay for The New Yorker in 1995, the book presents a candid and intimate exploration of the living spaces of some of New York City’s most iconic cultural figures, including Susan Sontag, Norman Mailer, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Allen Ginsberg, and Joan Didion.
With nothing added and nothing altered, Nabokov refers to these images as her interior "portraits." Some spaces exude indulgence and grandeur, while others embrace only the bare essentials, yet she captures them all with an objective lens, leaving interpretation to the viewer. Long out of print, this updated edition revives a distinct era in New York City’s history, seen through Nabokov’s original Polaroid photographs and accompanied by the original introduction by English poet James Fenton. It also sets the stage for the subsequent editions in Paris and Berlin, which Apartamento Publishing planned to reissue later in 2021.
