A Place of Memory in Karaköy

vitruta Heritage Edit

In Karaköy, some buildings offer more than a façade. They open a quiet interval in time. Located at the intersection of Boğazkesen Avenue and Defterdar Yokuşu, Yazıcızade Apartment carries Istanbul’s layered history with restraint. Today, it is home to the vitruta Karaköy store.

Built in 1905, the apartment reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of the late Ottoman era. Art Nouveau, Neo Classical, and Neo Baroque elements coexist on its façade, echoing the multicultural character of the Karaköy–Pera axis.

Cities tell their stories through places as much as through people. Some buildings become the backdrop of narratives, appearing between the lines of books or in the background of films.

Signed by architect E. G. Ladopoulos in two different languages, the building embodies Istanbul’s layered identity. Following a careful restoration in 2019, it continues its life within the contemporary city.

The vitruta Karaköy store marks the building’s present chapter. vitruta Heritage Edit begins here, tracing the architectural and cultural memory of the places vitruta inhabits.
