Brand Stories – Spreading Joy Through Design: Lar Studio
We had the pleasure of speaking with Laris Alara Kilimci, the founder of Lar Studio, known for its unique patterns and distinctive character, to learn more about her inspirations and the story behind the brand.
First off, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born on June 28, 1993, in New York but grew up in Istanbul. I’ve always had an inclination toward self-expression, whether through music, dance, or art during my childhood. Later, I pursued my passion at Central Saint Martins in London, where I graduated from the Moving Image program in 2015.
Over time, I discovered how spaces, objects, and products can deeply influence a person’s mood. I also found solace during tough times by appreciating life’s beauty in small details. Design has always been a significant part of my life, but my approach is rooted in emotional, expressive artistry. I’d say the things I create come more from my heart than my mind. In 2017, I founded the brand LAR, which I now manage while also exploring visual arts.
Scarves, which gained immense popularity in the 1970s, have long been a go-to accessory during seasonal transitions. They’ve evolved from a fleeting trend to timeless pieces. How did your journey with scarves begin?
To me, scarves are works of art that capture the essence of their time. They’re square or rectangular canvases where art, print, and fashion intersect.
How do you define fashion?
I see fashion as a way to embody different personas based on shifting moods. It’s an unintentional yet expressive way of showcasing your values and personality.
Scarves are one of the most functional accessories. How do you like to wear them the most? Do you have any creative usage suggestions?
Recently, I’ve been wearing them over masks, similar to Mexican ‘bandits.’ It creates a fun and complementary look with my outfits.
Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
Some of your designs seem to reflect influences from both Picasso and pop art. There are many elements that inspire my patterns, but at the end of the day, it’s essential to use dynamic color balance and rhythm effectively. In summary, my inspirations span a broad spectrum from graphic arts to modernist artists. Ultimately, the work stands on its own, whether alone or alongside other pieces.
How do artists influence you?
I’m more influenced by colors and shapes than by specific artists. I don’t focus much on who created the work; instead, I concentrate on the feeling and rhythm it conveys. My perspective on art is quite primitive and personal. I’m generally drawn to pieces that are pleasing to my eye or that raise questions in my subconscious.
Could you tell us a bit about your design and production process?
In my studio, everything starts by hand—drawing, cutting, and assembling fragments from my sketchbooks, often inspired by everyday life. These concepts are then digitized and produced at a local facility in Turkey using digital printing. I’m meticulous about selecting high-quality fabrics because I want my designs to be timeless, just like the products themselves. These aren’t items you use once and forget; they’re meant to be cherished, passed down through generations.
What kind of feedback do you get from people who buy Lar Studio products?
People who resonate with the brand’s spirit often tell me they feel better when they wear my designs. I truly believe that patterns and colors have the power to uplift one’s mood.
