Anlam’s Ever-lasting Stories

As vitruta, we continue to embrace the beauty of durability by internalizing the concept of sustainable fashion. That’s precisely why we keep introducing you to the inspiring members of the Good People of vitruta, along with the trusted products they’ve been using for years!

These products are not merely objects; they are seen as true companions that have accompanied them on countless adventures. Our second guest is Anlam Arslanoğlu de Coster.

Hello, Anlam! You’ve known vitruta for a long time, and vitruta has known you just as long—today, we’ll be getting to know a product that has been your companion for many years. So, when did you get this RAINS bag from vitruta?

I’ve had a long-standing connection with both vitruta and RAINS. My attachment to the brand actually began when I was living in London; we lived very close to their store on Upper Street. When I moved to Istanbul during the pandemic and discovered that my new neighbor vitruta was a haven for RAINS, I was thrilled.

I got this green bag at a vitruta Sample Sale, but since I have three of this model in different colors and sizes, I can’t recall the exact date. Whether it’s during travels or on those fast-paced days when I need to juggle different aspects of life, RAINS bags, accessories, and jackets are my lifesavers.

Every product we choose holds a special meaning for us, of course. This time, we want to hear it from you: Any stories you’d like to share?

I’m the kind of person who leaves the house like Inspector Gadget, carrying several bags and always ready for any situation. I’ve always envied those who board planes with just tiny bags, especially during travels. And now, since I also carry my 5-year-old daughter Ida’s world with me, I never leave home without at least two RAINS bags, no matter the season.

This bag, in particular, is incredibly lightweight and versatile, so it feels like my little portable home. On my last trip to Athens, this green bag traveled with me empty and came back filled with antiques and books.

Do you have other items you’ve been using for a long time like this one? P.S.: They don’t have to be from vitruta!

Unfortunately, I have the bad habit of getting attached to things. Since I try to buy items that are timeless and long-lasting, I find it hard to part with anything. So, the list is quite long!

There’s nothing quite like having a product accompany you for years. We know you’re one of those who value quality over quantity but we’re curious about the details: What kept you using these items for so long, what was your motivation?

Even if it might seem “irrational,” the memories embedded in these items bring me happiness. I try to choose things that will accompany me through different phases of my life. And, of course, I also try to avoid fast fashion as much as possible, both because of its exploitation of labor and the environmental damage it causes.

The way a product is made is just as important as the care the user puts into it. How did you maintain it, and what challenges did you face during this process?

One of the reasons I love RAINS bags, accessories, and jackets so much is because they’re built to withstand tough conditions and are incredibly easy to clean.

For example, I had a RAINS backpack from vitruta that I used for a long time until the zipper broke. It was the lightest bag I owned, so I couldn’t bear to throw it away. Instead, I had it repaired at Hazzopulo Passage and continued using it. I also had my RAINS cap, which kept me company for two winters, repaired by my tailor in Cihangir. After a good hand wash, it looked as good as new. Now that vitruta has partnered with tailor Latif Usta, it’s even easier to take care of the products we already own.

Let’s end our conversation with something motivating: What are your thoughts on durable and high-quality products from vitruta?

I know that vitruta approaches sustainability not just as a trend, but as an integral part of its DNA. The fact that you transparently share your meticulous approach in every aspect, from energy use to packaging, is incredibly valuable and hopefully inspires other retail entrepreneurs as well!

I’m always happy knowing that everything I buy from vitruta is carefully selected and that I’m contributing to ethical brands while shopping. For example, the Pestil Books and vitruta collaboration really excited me—second-hand books are the best gifts, in my opinion.
